Hi, I’m Rain and I’m non-binary. Here’s a short explanation so you don’t have to feel nervous about it 😋
What is non-binary?
In the Netherlands we officially recognize more than two genders. Next to male and female, non-binary is the third option. Non-binary is an umbrella term for anyone who is not 100% male or 100% female. That might mean you feel like both, or like neither.
Your birth sex or appearance don’t determine your gender: you get to decide, based on how you feel.
For me, being non-binary means: I’ve never felt like a woman, I don’t feel the need to be a man either,
in fact I don’t really feel any gender in myself at all — and I’m completely fine with that 😊👍
Pronouns
Pronouns are words you use to refer to people, animals, or things. The most common ones are she/her, he/him, and they/them.
- Fleur? Yeah, she has been cycling all day. Did you see her riding with her friends?
- Diego? Yeah, he has been cycling all day. Did you see him riding with his friends?
- Rain? Yeah, they have been cycling all day. Did you see them riding with their friends?
I’d rather not be referred to as she. He is okay, but my favorite pronoun is they.
I really appreciate it if you say: “Rain has a pink bike, that’s really their favorite color.”
And hey, I won’t get angry if you slip and say she or he. But I much prefer they.
Oh, and if you ever want to see a passport with an X instead of an F or M, you now know who to ask 😊
